Paul Klee 1ST Edition (The Library of Great Painters) Details

It may come as a surprise that Klee, whose art is so saturated with nuance and imagination, was a serious and excellent teacher through much of his life. His writings, and especially his Pedagogical Sketchbook, are a consummately clear exposition of this side of his nature. Klee left over nine thousand pieces when he died, but only a small part of this work has been reproduced in any form, let alone in colorplates. It is the special advantage o f this book that it contains many new reproductions in color; that it uncovers new treasures, some of them masterpieces from private collections that only recently have become accessible. Will Grohmann, the author of this book, was a longtime friend of Klee. he was one of the first critics to applaud the artist, and early established himself as the leading authority on Klee and his art. In this new survey, Grohmann presents an illustrated biography, and then briefly comments on Klee's drawings in a special selection of graphic works. Drawings comprise more than half of Klee's production, and to the artist himself they were important. He did not sell them; occasionally he gave them to friends. But the heart of this book is formed by the forty-eight large, handsome colorplates of paintings and pastels. together with their detailed analyses, they bring the reader to a deeper understanding of Klee's world of images. Paul Klee appears to have secured his place in the annals of art; he seems to be one of the few artists of our century who have risen above the contentions of changing philosophies of art, establishing himself on a plane of universal acceptance. 138 illustrations, including 48 tipped-on colorplates.(taken from book flap) Read more
